Rise of the Planet of the Apes laat zien hoe genetische experimenten op primaten in San Francisco mislopen. Het gevolg van de experimenten is een hyperintelligente aap genaamd Caesar, die besluit het op te nemen tegen zijn menselijke overheersers. Ondanks dat de film gezien kan worden als een prequel op de Planet of the Apes film van Tim Burton en de oorspronkelijke film uit 1968 met Charlton Heston in de hoofdrol, zouden we de film volgens de producers niet helemaal zo moeten zien. De film omvat namelijk een eigen mythologie, die schijnbaar toch verschilt van die van eerdere films. Zo moet ook meteen de basis gelegd zijn voor een (aantal) vervolgfilm(s). De film onderging overigens maar liefst vier naamsveranderingen. In eerste instantie zou de film Caesar heten, vervolgens werd het Caesar: Rise of the Apes, daarna Rise of the Apes en nu logischerwijs is het Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
