Oud-politieagent Matt Scudder, verdient nu als ongelicenseerd privédetective zijn geld. Als een heroïnesmokkelaar hem vraagt de mannen die zijn vrouw ontvoerden en op brute wijze vermoord hebben, op te jagen, ontdekt de privédetective dat het niet bepaald de eerste keer is dat deze mannen zoiets gedaan hebben. En het zal ook niet de laatste zijn. Aan Scudder de taak hen te stoppen, voordat het te laat is.
