Jim wordt samen met zijn ouders opgepakt in het door oorlog verscheurde Shanghai en belandt uiteindelijk in een Japans concentratiekamp. Jim weet zijn hoofd boven water te houden, maar verliest verder alles wat hij heeft. Na de bevrijding wordt Jim op vrije voeten gesteld en de wereld waar hij in terechtkomt staat in zijn ogen bol van verraad en teleurstellingen.
