Wanneer Becky Fuller (Rachel McAdams) een baan krijgt bij de slecht bekeken ochtendshow 'Daybreak', besluit zij om het programma in een nieuw jasje te steken door de legendarische tv-presentator Mike Pomeroy (Harrison Ford) aan te nemen. Helaas weigert Pomeroy om geijkte onderwerpen als gossip, het weerbericht en de laatste mode te presenteren. En hij wil dit al helemaal niet doen met zijn co-presentatrice Colleen Peck (Diane Keaton), een voormalige winnares van Miss-verkiezingen die maar al te graag luchtige nieuwtjes bespreekt. Mike en Colleen liggen zowel tijdens de opnames als daarbuiten met elkaar overhoop. En als Becky ook nog een heftige affaire begint met collega-producent Adam Bennett (Patrick Wilson) komt haar hele leven op zn kop te staan: haar relatie, haar reputatie, haar baan en haar programma...
