Wanneer Oscar Diggs (Franco), een onbezorgde goochelaar in het circus, door een tornado in het stoffige Kansas terecht komt in het kleurrijke land van Oz, denkt hij de loterij te hebben gewonnen... totdat hij drie heksen ontmoet: Theodora (Kunis), Evanora (Weisz) en Glinda (Williams), die er niet van overtuigd zijn dat hij de grote tovenaar is waarop iedereen heeft gewacht. Oscar moet erachter zien te komen wie goed is en wie kwaad is voordat het te laat is. Met zijn magische krachten verandert Oscar zichzelf niet alleen in de grote en machtige tovenaar van Oz, maar wordt hij ook een beter mens.
