De film gaat over de onzekere prins George die, nadat zijn broer aftreedt, de nieuwe koning van Engeland wordt als George VI. Probleem is echter dat de nieuwe koning een spraakprobleem heeft, wat hem niet echt koninklijk doet overkomen. Daarom schakelt hij de hulp in van de spraaktherapeut Lionel Logue (Rush), wat resulteert in een ongewone vriendschap.
