Het is de Tweede Wereldoorlog op het fictieve Schotse eiland Todday. De inwoners merken weinig van de rantsoenering, totdat de voorraad whisky op het eiland opraakt. Als een vrachtschip met 50.000 vaten whisky voor de kust van het eiland strandt, smokkelen de bewoners de scheepslading stiekem aan wal. Ze ondervinden problemen met de Britse overheid onder leiding van kapitein Wagget.
